Single Stem Harvesting is a unique form of helicopter logging where quality is considered more than quantity, This specialized services requires the agility to climb trees with a chain saw and climbing gear and in some cases swing from tree to tree without touching the ground. Since 2005 we have completed more than 100,000 m3 of single stem harvesting.
This aerial removal of individual, high quality standing trees is completed in 4 phases. The first phase is the selection process. Engineers select stems and provide each of them with it own number. Climbers then climb this stems and cut off all their limbs and cut the stem to a specific height. The third stage, completed by a certified faller, is called jigging, Jigging requires the faller to cut the tree precisely to keep it standing to allow the helicopter to remove it.
This sometimes means leaving only a 1.5cm strip in the middle of the tree! The last stage is the responsibility of the helicopter. The helicopter finds the stem and removes it with a large grapple flying the stem to the landing for the trucks. Using the helicopter maintains that the stem never needs to touch the ground!
